The origins of Orange Shirt Day came from an elder remembering the new orange shirt she’d picked out for the first day of residential school and how it was taken away from her and she was given a uniform. Held on September 30, it honours the students who attended residential schools. Clinton Elementary held a special assembly to share its significance. In a gym adorned with paper orange shirts the assembly included an eloquent student poem, a student dance, a story and a video. Students and staff were adorned in either orange shirts or equally bright shirts to bring home the message that every child matters.
